Central places in air transport networks

Cities have very different degrees of connectivity and thus centrality within the global web of individual mobility. Passenger air transport offers well documented metrics, eg by looking at nonstop destinations, frequency of flights and number of seats offered.

Within the wider framework of 'relational geography', the analysis of connectivity is one step in the development of indicators which allow monitoring over time, ranking of places and establishing relations with other (eg economic) observations.

Public web services provide access to flight statistics, data will need to be aggregated in an adequate database environment and visualized via web maps. This kind of project can be completed as a standalone effort, or lead to a deeper involvement eg through a thesis.
